Stuff and Suchlike

So here is an article about Alex Klein for the less oboe-oriented of the people who read this comic.

Basically, he’s a totally ridiculous oboe player. Jim was playing one of his CDs at Reed Jail a couple of weeks ago, and I more or less wanted to give up the oboe because of it. I’LL NEVER BE THAT GOOD! *goes off to cry*
Anyway, Jim wants to get him to come give a masterclass. It would be pretty amazing if he did. However, we *probably* would not perform brain surgery on him.
In other news, I’m playing the Hindemith Sonata for Oboe and Piano for the fall, and I have a student recital scheduled for November 1st. I’m nervous already. Man…recitals are not my strong suit.

A bunch of us went to see the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra’s first concert–it was good! I think Edwin Outwater is going to be good for them, he seems like a great conductor. They played Ravel’s Piano Concerto (with the crazy-long English Horn solo, played by Faith Levene, who did a nice job), a piece from John Adams’ opera “Nixon in China,” a more modern piece called “Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety” which Outwater dealt with very nicely, and Beethoven’s Fifth.
I think a lot of music students are kind of sick of it–especially the first movement–but I like it because it was the first symphony I ever played in. Memories!
There was a reception afterwards, but I only stuck around long enough to make sure Jim knew I’d been, and then I buggered off. Too many people…I was twitching and a few moments from screaming and dashing out, knocking hot coffee into old ladies. AAH!
Waiting at the bus stop was *freezing*.

I’m waiting to get an mp3 hosted, and then you will get an awesome blog, analyzing a song by Stars that I happened upon a few weeks ago that is based on (and incorporates) a theme from the third movement of Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique.
Later, skaters!

When Oboe Excerpts Show Up In Pop Songs

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

One of the things that is becoming extremely exciting for me right now is the crossover between Independent Canadian music and “classical” music. Owen Pallett, for example, was a music major, has written operas, and once was as fully ensconced in the world of art music as he currently is in the world of popular music. The Bell Orchestre and Torngat are two bands who fall under the title of “Orchestral Post-rock”. It’s great! It’s exciting! It’s the amalgamation of the two worlds I’m finding myself increasingly pulled between.

Anyway. I blogged a couple of weeks ago about the band Stars, and getting to go see them at the Starlight Lounge. I also wrote a review of the concert for my school paper, The Cord. (Side note: I’ve been pondering starting up an unofficial music faculty newspaper–occasional and more or less underground–and calling it “The Chord”. Wouldn’t that be awesome? But I digress.)

All this to say, there is a song on Stars’ second album “Heart” called ‘Look Up’ which includes, incorporates, and is somewhat based on an excerpt from the third movement of Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. It’s just a six note theme, but I’d say it’s one of the most memorable moments in the entire symphony (other than the inevitable “March to the Scaffold” of course). In it, the oboe represents a farmer in the hills, calling to another farmer (represented by the english horn) who answers. The protagonist of the piece hears them while he’s lying in a field. By the end of the movement, one of the farmer’s calls is only responded to by thunder, and it begins to storm. In comparison, the lyrics of “Look Up” end with the line ‘rain is falling, looks like love.” And, of course, with Symphonie Fantastique actually being a whole love story, that comparison can be drawn as well.

Someone on SongMeanings.net wrote this comment, which I find interesting and appropriate:

MindsTheatrre:

I’m so glad somebody else pointed out the Berlioz connection. I first heard this song at a Gap, immediatly after a semester spent studying the Symphonie Fantastique. I was at first I was angry that it had been ripped – but then…
As ohpioneer points out, the storm idea does connect, and it’s nice that way. Except the entire movement of the Berlioz isn’t about a storm, necessarily, it’s about lonliness. The oboe is absent at the end, the melody at some points in the middle drops out entirely, it’s far from a love song, it’s a lost song. Plus, the entire symphony is more about dark obsession than pretty lovey-dovey. So I freaked out – Stars had missed the point entirely. But I re-evaluated. The call itself, the only part that’s used in Look Up, is a love call. It’s just never answered. But that small little 6 note pattern is the essence of love. And in that Stars did Berlioz justice.

It’s a great song, certainly one of the strongest off of “Heart,” and I was *so* happy when they played it at the concert two weeks ago.
I find it something to be excited about, you know? My two favourite kinds of music coming together, and it working!

We’ve hosted the mp3 for your listening pleasure:
“Look Up” – Stars

Your friends hold the lullabys
They watch the way the night lies
Soft sounds, heads like a radio
Hearts wrapped in blankets, laying low
Hearts wrapped in blankets, laying low

You’re cold, maybe you just miss the sun
You fall feeling like it’s just begun
So far keeping it together’s been enough
Look up the rain is falling
Looks like love

Your boy is like a memory
With some sense of touch and a melody
Your girl she’s a renegade
A hurricane that keeps you there, safe
Hurricane that keeps you there, safe

You’re cold maybe you just miss the sun
You fall feeling like it’s just begun
So far keeping it together’s been enough
But look up the rain is falling
Looks like love

You’re cold maybe you just miss the sun
You fall feeling like it’s just begun
So far keeping it together’s been enough
But look up the rain is falling
Looks like love

You’re cold maybe you just miss the sun
You fall feeling like it’s just begun
So far keeping it together’s been enough
But look up the rain is falling
Looks like love
Rain is falling
Looks like love

The Threshold of Pain (blog)

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

I know it doesn’t have stick people in it. I was never super-satisfied with that style to begin with, so I’m going to be experimenting with other drawing types. I like this one, actually. It’s simple and looks snazzy, and it’s possible to get a surprising amount of expression out of those two faces.

Anyway, let me know if you like or dislike one of other “art” styles.

Sexy Hoom

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Someone came to my site by searching that. What is it? No, seriously. What is sexy hoom? All that I can think of is Ent porn, and frankly, that’s a bit on the frightening side.

Time is flying by so freaking quickly! I can’t believe it’s already October, and Thanksgiving is this weekend, and the first Wind Bag and Wellington Winds concerts are in a few weeks. I might die with all this stuff…Katrina wants me to play with the Cambridge Symphony for their concerts, too. And I’m not sure if I can handle it, much as I’d like to.

I have a new shaper tip! It’s a Mack tip, and it is making my life soooo much happier. My sides are no longer flappy! I have made (and Jim has made prettier) every reed that is currently in my case. I’m pretty happy about that; it means my reeds are getting better, and I can start taking full credit for my sound–once I stop having to take them to Jim so he can work his magic, of course.

I split, planed, and gouged a bunch of cane yesterday. Today I need to shape it and tie a bunch of blanks…and maybe start scraping on one. I also need to get cracking on my nonet. “Get cracking, Ren. Get CRACKING.”
In other news: Kristen sent me a full week’s worth of comics for y’all to enjoy, so there is a comic every day (except Sunday) this week! Excitement!

EDIT: Randy finally got around posting a blog about the Boston “Dream Girl” meetup. I was there!

Moy is back! …and ranting.

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Yep. I’m back. I promise! I have comics… and I finally coloured one!! That’s right! Ren’s shirt isn’t grey or black. It’s green. XKCD will just have to get over it. =D She will wear black for occasions, just for them.

So Moy! Why did you fall off the face of Obohemia?

Because. I don’t have a scanner, so I have to give them to Ren.

But… it’s October…

Yeah, I love October, too! I’m gonna be a pirate for halloween!! …not a ninja. *off topic a bit*

=D

So I am getting sick and tired of hearing this all over the place. I stopped listening to the radio so I can get away… but a certain employee last night (actually 2 of them) decided to play this.

I have a pet peeve when people will listen to a classical piece, but only the opening. Sometimes not even the entire opening, just the first two sentences. So this is what I’m hearing… the opening to a beautiful piano piece and when the intro is done, it repeats itself. Great. Techno? No. RAP. I’m not saying that Rap isn’t music, but they sure like to butcher classics like no other. I’m hearing it all the time now. Why? WHY? The text has nothing to do with anything, they just want a pre-composed “classy” sound underneath them so they don’t have to compose it. It’s so easy to put something on loop, you know.

It’s things like this that make people so impatient. They start to lack cultural knowledge and they only know what the media craps out into Canada. People can be so ignorant that they won’t investigate in a sound they like that some Rapper “borrowed”. They will hear that opening some day in a tv commercial and say “Hey! I know that! That Rapper did that!” but then they will hear it being continued (if we’re lucky) and just be confused waiting for the “beat” to come in. I’m not mad at the rappers as much as I am PISSED at the audience for being so ignorant.

Now, I agree with Ren that it is good to have it out there, because for some people, it’s all they really get. But I would settle if the original composers got more credit. For example: “50 Cent, featuring Vivaldi

Anyways, sexy sexy Micheal Shanks calls me. (Daniel Jackson) Must go!

Pirate vs Ninjas!

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Ren and I have this thing going on for Hallowe’en. I want a school of Pirates and she wants a school of Ninjas.

Ren’s Ninjas:

I have a dream…a dream in which on Hallowe’en there are hundreds of ninjas running around the music faculty. In Skills, Terry, Trevor, and Carol teach to classes of masked faces. Students (all in black) move stealthily from room to room, hiding around corners, and pouncing on non-ninjas.

Being a ninja: It’s the ULTIMATE concert black!

Dear everyone:
This is my way of proposing that everyone dress up like a ninja for Hallowe’en. The costume is super-easy. All you have to do is wear black (or another solid colour–pink ninja, anyone?) and follow the instructions for making a ninja headdress (they are posted in the album).

BADASS.

Moy’s Pirates:

Sick of wearing concert black? Instead of a school of just Ninjas for Hallowe’en, what about a school of Pirates, too? It’s not that hard to make a costume. I have most of the costume in my closet! Have fun trying stuff on. Mix and match! You are in charge of how creative you can be!

Ninjas work by themselves, however, PIRATES can go on RAIDS! How cool is that? We can raid the music lounge! (mwahaha!!) Candy is our loot.

So, who’s with me? The more pirates, the more fun!

Moy vs Ren? Kinda, but the more ninjas and pirates, the more fun. =D

Which one will you be? You can join either Ren’s or Moy’s Facebook group!

Ninjas
Pirates

Have fun!

How Do You Expect To Play the Oboe If You Can’t Even Peel a Mushroom?

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Well Mr. Tabuteau, sir, I should hope that I am playing music, not making hors d’oeuvres. On the other hand, best title for a biography ever.

Hindemith Doom is in T minus 9 days. <kidding> Please excuse me while I off myself. </kidding>
