Fire

The heat from a match will expand the cork, giving it enough life to get you through the lesson. It's more fun just to let the student think you're setting their oboe on fire, though.

I was setting a pad for a young student, not paying close attention to how close the flame was getting to the oboe. Not only did I scorch a tenon cork, but I melted the oboe a wee bit. Sigh. Talk about embarrassing and scary. (The oboe is fine, but still ….)

I foresee this happening to me on a regular basis if I start teaching and am given an opportunity to use matches. Uh oh.
